The collegiate wrestling world turned its attention to Tulsa, Oklahoma this weekend for the National Duals Invitational, hosted by Oklahoma State Cowboys. One of the most exciting storylines came from Colorado’s own talent, Brandon Cannon — now wrestling for the Ohio State Buckeyes — who delivered a standout performance in a high-stakes setting.
Cannon, the Ohio State redshirt sophomore from Ponderosa High School, knocked off reigning national champ Antrell Taylor of Nebraska in the semifinals via major decision 16-4, sparking Ohio State’s dominant performance. He backed it up in the finals by winning 14-2 over Iowa’s Victor Voinovich at 157 lbs, helping the Buckeyes claim the title and take home the check for winning the event.
Cannon may have checked off a major milestone, but this is only the beginning. He’ll now carry momentum into the rest of the season — Big Ten duals, conference championships, and eventually national tournament aspirations.
For Colorado fans, this is a moment to celebrate — one of our own making waves on the national stage and for wrestling watchers, keep an eye on Cannon: this weekend wasn’t a flash in the pan, it may very well be the start to something big. Go get em Cannon!
